County Games Hockey Tournament

Hampshire and Isle of Wight School Games 2015

Hockey Report

Having qualified as runners up in The New Forest District tournament, the hockey team from LJS were thrilled to be taking part in the county finals at Aldershot Military Stadium.

We faced 4 other schools in our group matches; St Francis (lost 2-0), All Saints ( Lost 1-0) Otterbourne (Won 2-1), and Newlands (Lost 1-0). Mixed results but as the team grew in confidence, each match became more closely contested.

Finishing 4th in the group we progressed through to the 9th -16th position play-offs where we faced Hook with Warsash. At full time the score was 1-1 so a penalty shoot out was necessary. This turned out to be a nerve wracking but exciting experience. After the 3 nominated players had taken their turns, the scores were level. Each other team member then had to take their turn until the 2 teams could be separated by ‘sudden death’. Unbelievably, 26 penalty shots later, LJS, having kept their nerve, came out winners!

Newlands were then our opponents again and we lost to them 2-0 this time. I think all our energy had been drained on the penalty shoot out!

Our final game was a repeat of The New Forest District Final against Abbotswood so we were anticipating a challenging game for several reasons! They scored only 1 goal in the last 2 minutes of the game.

Out of the 19 best teams in the county we are proud to say that having taken part in these championships for the first time, we did extremely well to finish 14th overall. Every single member of the team played with determination ,showing resilience when things got tough and demonstrated some of the best sportsmanship that I have witnessed when taking children to sporting events.

A very big thank you to Mrs Tollerfield and Mrs Gwilliam for driving on the day, for the support and encouragement for the team and for me keeping me calm and organised!

We hope that the 2 girls from Newlands who were injured and carried away by stretcher during our first game against them are recovering well! (That’s another story!)

The team: Lois Tollerfield, Ferdy Bailey, Alex Oatley, Jay Gwilliam, Jasper Moosun, Ruth Turberville, Kayleigh Robinson, Emmie Nisbet, Phoebe Hallet.

Looking forward to a new season in September when we will be training at Preistlands after school on Mondays.
